Jasiri means bold, confident, and brave in Swahili.
Periods and menstrual hygiene are largely taboo topics in many African countries such as Kenya.
This is why the Jasiri Project by Foothold International aims to provide young women in Kenya with washable menstrual pads. Not only do these kits provide essential feminine hygiene products, but it helps lift the stigma around periods.
In some cultures, monthly periods are called the “week of shame” and women are required to stay in certain shelters until they are “clean.”
This project also provides a sustainable income to the women (and one man) who sews them and helps to reduce environmental impact of disposable waste.
Each Jasiri t-shirt purchase will provide a feminine hygiene kit for one girl, containing 3 washable pads and underwear. T-shirts are made of a cotton poly blend and available in unisex sizes.
