BELIEFS & VALUES

  1. Poverty is rooted in broken relationships (When Helping Hurts)·
  2. Poverty alleviation is an essential component of Jesus’ gospel message (Luke 4:18)
  3. Poverty is a complex problem not solved with material solutions alone (Walking with the Poor)
  4.  Paternalism is a destructive force in poverty alleviation efforts (When Helping Hurts).
  5.  Poverty is best alleviated through a strength-based approach, honoring the dignity of those we serve.
  6.  Programs and projects are most effective in the context of personal relationships.
  7. Small long-term projects are preferred to larger-scale, short-term events.

GOALS

  1. To provide justice for young girls, women and other vulnerable populations (Objectives 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).
  2. To promote sanitation and hygiene practices to reduce disease and mortality (Objectives  7, 8, 10).
  3. To reduce poverty through education and entrepreneurship  (Objectives 3, 4, 5, 6, 9).
  4. To promote education by:
    • Increasing access to education for at-risk youth.
    • Utilizing local schools as a resource for community improvement. (Objectives 3, 4, 5, 6)
  5. To empower local visionaries and servant-leaders who share Foothold’s goals and values (Objectives 5, 7, 9. 10).
  6. To reduce negative impacts on the environment through small-scale, household innovations and practices (Objectives 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).

OBJECTIVES

  1.  Increase access to feminine hygiene products by increasing the production of Jasiri pads by 40% in 2020 in Taita-Taveta area.
  2.  To develop support services for girls enrolled in school in Taita-Taveta region.
  3.  To increase attendance of girls of the age of puberty by 30 % in 2019 Taita-Taveta region.
  4.  To increase enrollment of girls in high school by 10 %  for 2020 from the Taita-Taveta region.
  5.  To increase high school graduation among girls by 5% in 2020 from the Taita-Taveta region .
  6.  To establish a Maasai men’s school in the fall of 2019 in the area of Njoro Maasai.  This school would teach basic life and language skills as well as instructing them on how to better treat the women and children of their community.  A one-time cost of $800 for building a structure and $2400/year for teacher salary.
  7.  To make safe drinking water available through the installation of Biosand filters by 10% in 2020.
  8.  To enhance personal hygiene in the Taita-Taveta area by increasing soap production by 80% in 2020.
  9.  Create sustainable business from soap sales to pay back micro loans provided within one year.
  10. Raise a yearly fund of $6,000 to provide travel for the American staff to travel to Kenya twice a year for 30-60 days.
